The Janiculum Hill

This week in my Survey class we walked around the Gianicolo Hill.  According to legend, this hill was where St. Peter was crucified.  Due to this, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain bought the property here in 1500 and built the temple pictured in the courtyard, the Tempietto di San Pietro (St. Peter's Little Temple).  The Tempietto and the courtyard are within a church, San Pietro in Montorio (St. Peter's Church on the Golden Mountain), so named because it was farmland for much of Rome's history and so when the sun set it became a mountain of gold.  Below are the interior of the Tempietto and the crypt beneath.

From there the class ended, and we were directed to either follow the teacher down the hill to the bus station or to go the scenic route above the city.  Naturally, I took the scenic route.  Among some of the things on the route there was this fountain, Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, built to commemorate the reopening of an aqueduct.  This fountain was also the inspiration for the famous Trevi Fountain.
